Destination Graduation: MENTORS NEEDED!
2011-06-22Every Youth CAN Succeed
Valley of the Sun United Way is partnering with Phoenix Union High School District and Phoenix Elementary School District #1 to help youth make a successful transition from middle school to high school and graduate with skills necessary for post secondary success. This program is called Destination Graduation and will employ early warning system technology – a cutting-edge tool to identify students in need of support; coupled with resource coordinators on campuses to provide those supports and ensure successful transition and graduation will skills necessary for post secondary success in college, work and life.
Classroom Mentoring Opportunity – Volunteers Needed!
Volunteers are needed to participate in a classroom mentoring program at Central High School during the 2011-12 school year. The mentoring program is based on a teacher-led curriculum designed to increase resiliency skills in 9th grade students by exploring their current lives, motivators, actions and goals. The program builds trusting relationships between the educator, mentor and students based on their mutual goal of success.
Volunteer Requirements:
- Must be able to commit a minimum of 16 hours of classroom time over the course of the 2011-12 school year.
- Must be 21 or older.
- Must participate in a half-day training each semester (outside of the normal work day).
- Must participate in a program orientation (about 8 daytime hours).
- Must complete a volunteer application, including supervisor approval.
- Must register for the initial training session by July 22, 2011.
Volunteer Responsibilities:
- Engage with students as they go through 15 teacher-led lessons about Goal setting, School confidence, Connections, Stress, Well-being.
- Volunteers will receive mentoring and classroom management training, as well as training on the curriculum that will be used with the youth.
