Our Results: Neighborhood Health and Safety

Create Stronger, Safer Neighborhhods.

As part of a collaborative effort to improve the vibrancy of Valley communities, Valley of the Sun United Way has partnered with the City of Phoenix, the Stardust Foundation, the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust and the United Phoenix Fire Fighters Association to pilot neighborhood revitalization projects in key areas. Known as FireStar, this initiative brings together neighborhood associations, local faith-based organizations, and business leaders, as well as nonprofit and government entities, to develop a neighborhood improvement action plan. In Maryvale, for example, the FireStar program created greater curb appeal and neighborhood anti-blight strategies by reducing 3,000 sites of graffiti and beautifying 73 homes. This activity contributed to a reduction in personal and property crime in the targeted area.

Another component of FireStar focuses on safety measures in multiple communities to prevent the tragic loss of family members and loved ones by drowning or fire, while also helping to offset health and public safety costs. In 2008, community canvassing activities in three targeted high-risk neighborhoods helped protect an estimated 3,000 individuals through the installation of 687 smoke alarms and replacement of 865 smoke alarm batteries. To further improve neighborhood safety, Valley of the Sun United Way was awarded a grant targeting hearing-impaired residents in need of specially designed smoke alarms to alert them in the event of a house fire.
