Unique program provides donated pool fences to prevent child drownings
PHOENIX – Weather reports indicate temperatures in Phoenix were not only the hottest July on record but it was the hottest month of all time in Phoenix. As Valley residents deal with the heat and many turn to pools for relief, the United Phoenix Firefighters Association and Valley of the Sun United Way urge all individuals to be vigilant around pools to keep Valley children safe.
During these scorching summer temperatures, the United Phoenix Fire Fighters Association and Valley of the Sun United Way continue to take a proactive approach to prevent child drownings through the Adopt-a-Pool-Fence Program. The program provides qualifying low-income families throughout Maricopa County with a donated pool fence, offering a physical barrier between their children and their backyard swimming pools. Applications for the Adopt-a-Pool Fence program are available at www.saverkids.org or by calling 602.631.4843. All applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A child six years of age or younger must be living in the home
- The home must be owner-occupied
- Families must demonstrate financial need
“This program is one of the most aggressive efforts to prevent child drownings and the safety of our Valley’s children remains a top priority,” said Rich Bauer, Director of Community Programs for the United Phoenix Fire Fighters Association.
The Adopt-a-Pool-Fence Program was created by the United Phoenix Fire Fighters Association in 2003 to prevent child drownings in Maricopa County. The Adopt-a-Pool Fence program aims to provide families in need with a protective barrier to keep their children safe. As part of Valley of the Sun United Way’s commitment to improve the health and safety of neighborhoods, it has partnered to expand the program across the Valley. Since the inception of the program, more than 500 pool fences have been donated to families in need throughout Maricopa County.
